Alexander Hohenthal was born on May 14th 1969 in the Styrian town of Bruck an der Mur as the youngest child of an old Austrian family originally from Bukowina.
At the early age of five his musical talent was noticed and he received his first violin lessons with Ferdinand Reiter at the music school of his hometown.
He first appeared in public that same year.

While still of school age he continued his studies at the Mozarteum Salzburg, taking lessons with Prof. Roczek at first.From 1989 the violin virtuoso Ruggiero Ricci became his most important teacher. Further mentors were Lukas Hagen, Ivry Gitlis and Sandor Vegh.
Alexander Hohenthal received his concert diploma with distinction in 1992.

Having won various prizes at national and international violin competitions in Tokyo, Cologne and Salzburg the next years see debuts at Gidon Kremers Lockenhaus festival, the Salzburg Mozartwoche, in London, Birmingham, Berlin and Washington, at the Wiener Konzerthaus and Musikverein, the Salzburger Pfingstfestspiele 1999 and, together with Nigel Kennedy, at the opening concert at Santa Cecilia in Rome.

Feeling equally at home in the solo and chambermusic repertoire Alexander made important encounters with the Wiener Streichsextett, the Zehetmair Quartett, Lukas and Veronika Hagen, Cordelia Höfer, Paul Gulda, Howard Shelley and David Owen Norris and performed as soloist with conductors like Fabrice Bollon, Michael Gielen, Fabio Luisi, Giovanni Antonini as well as Ivor Bolton and Sir Roger Norrington.

Hohenthals concert appearences feature also the repertoire for unaccompanied violin and are enthusiastically received by experts, audiences and critics.
